Like his identical twin brother Ben, Tom is a flanker for Sale Sharks. Since making his debut for the club in 2016, he has gone on to represent England and the British and Irish Lions on the international stage.
Tom made his professional debut for the Sharks in October 2016 in the European Champions Cup, becoming the fourth-youngest player and the youngest Sharks player to have appeared in the competition.
Just two weeks later he scored on his Premiership debut making him the third-youngest scorer in the competition, and his performances in that first season led to him and his brother Ben being named as joint recipients of the Young Player of the Season award.
Like his twin, Tom was named in the England U20 squad for the 2016/17 season, having previously represented the U18s.
He was part of the U20 England squad that won the Grand Slam in the 2017 Six Nations U20 Championships.
And in 2017, he was called up for the senior England squad for a tour of Argentina, becoming the youngest player to start at flanker for England.
He was named in England’s 2019 Six Nations squad and started at number 7 in every game, scoring tries against Wales and Scotland.
With England, he won the Six Nations and the Autumn Nations Cup in 2020.
In May 2021, he was selected to represent the British and Irish Lions on their tour of South Africa.
Speaking about Tom, England Coach Eddie Jones said: “He’s become a real leader within our team, he drives the physical standards, drives the standards of the breakdown and he’s only going to keep improving.”
