Versatile South African star Ernst van Rhyn joined Sale Sharks on a long-term contract ahead of the 2023/24 Gallagher Premiership season. The forward, who can play in the second-row or back-row, signed a three-year deal to join Alex Sanderson’s side from the Cape Town-based Stormers and Western Province.
Ernst, who stands at 6’3” and weighs more than 18 stone, made his 50th appearance for the Stormers against Harlequins in the Heineken Champions Cup in April, 2023, and featured against Exeter Chiefs in the last eight.
Ernst was a former teammate of Sharks star Cobus Wiese at both domestic and international level, with the pair teaming up for South Africa’s U20s side at the 2016 World Cup in England. During the tournament he played one game for the Junior Springboks at the Salford Stadium.
