Luke has a new lease of life up North

Luke Cowan-Dickie insists his summer switch to Sale Sharks has given him a ‘new lease of life’ in terms of his rugby.

The England international brought the curtain down on his 13-year stay with Exeter Chiefs at the end of last season – and was due to switch to French Top 14 side, Montpellier.

However, concerns over an operation on his neck and subsequent nerve damage saw his two-year deal fall flat on the floor, this despite some claims in the French media that his cross-Channel move had been terminated after he spent a night in a ‘drunk tank’ and the inference was Montpellier pulled out as a result.

“Some of what was said was true, other bits weren’t,” said the 30-year-old Cornishman. “Post the thing that potentially happened, they [Montpellier] weren’t too happy, but they were okay. It was more medical.

“In life, though, things happen for a reason and for me this could turn out to be a blessing in disguise. I’m at Sale now and since the day I walked in to the club, it’s been decent and the boys, the coaches, everyone, they’ve been class.”

Having come through the ranks at the Chiefs to win two Premiership Rugby titles and a Heineken Champions Cup crown, Cowan-Dickie admits his switch to the North West was somewhat daunting at first.

“All I knew was what we did at the Chiefs,” he added. “Yes, I’ve been in international camps and obviously with the British & Irish Lions, but Exeter has been pretty much my rugby life.

“Coming up here, it’s new faces, new coaches, some of whom I knew before, but a lot I didn’t and it’s just been brilliant. Working with the team and staff, I’ve been given a new lease of life and I want to make the most of that.

“Alex [Sanderson] is a sound guy and we’ve had some pretty honest chats already. He just wants me to be me and to get myself back in the groove.”
