SHARKS FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES RUGBY CLUB RUN

Sale Sharks Foundation Announces Rugby Club Run: An 8-Day, 90+ Mile Relay to Support Grassroots Rugby and raise Mental Health Awareness

The Sale Sharks Foundation is thrilled to announce the launch of the Rugby Club Run, an inspiring 8-day relay event covering over 90 miles across Greater Manchester. From September 15th to September 22nd, 2024, dedicated supporters and staff from the Sale Sharks Foundation will embark on a journey to raise vital funds and awareness for grassroots rugby development and mental health through the Foundation’s HEADSTART program.

A Journey Beyond the Miles

The Rugby Club Run is not just about the physical challenge—it’s a celebration of community, sport, and the power of connection. The event was inspired by the moving story of two Sale Sharks fans, David Blyth and Chris Randall, who used rugby and running to overcome personal challenges and improve their mental health. Their story of friendship and resilience has become the driving force behind this relay, highlighting the impact of sport on mental well-being.

David Blyth shared his journey:
“My name is David, I’m a 42-year-old father of four from Manchester. I have three children with autism and suffer from depression. My friend Chris introduced me to running and rugby to get me out of the house and improve my mental health. It has made a significant difference in my life, and I’ve even introduced my youngest son to rugby. We are now both proud Sharks season ticket holders.”

Chris Randall added:
“As a father of six, including two adopted children, I believe in the power of family, love, and giving back. Rugby has always been a passion of mine and sharing it with my kids is one of my greatest joys. Helping others, especially in the realm of mental health, is something I am deeply committed to.”

Connecting Communities Through Rugby

The Rugby Club Run will see participants carry the Sale Sharks Rugby Ball through eight rugby clubs that are part of the Foundation’s grassroots development program. The route starts at Salford Community Stadium and winds its way through the region, culminating back at the stadium just in time for the Sale Sharks’ first home game of the 2024/2025 Gallagher Premiership season against Harlequins on September 22nd.

Each day, a different leg of the relay will be completed by a team of runners, including five fans and five Foundation staff members, with support from local rugby club members. This unique format not only raises funds but also strengthens the bonds between the Sale Sharks Foundation and the rugby clubs it serves.
