Roger Bowen – Obituary

Sale Sharks are deeply saddened to announce the passing of former Sale Sharks Supporters Club Chairman, Roger Bowen, on Thursday 28th January 2021.

Roger was Sale Sharks through and through and was instrumental in developing relationships with opposing team supporters, often organising meet-up’s before and after games across Europe.

Roger was amongst the first supporters to set off to a European away match and his thriftiness was legendary. An unusual route that saved a few quid was his forte and the same went for his attitude to accommodation. His much vaunted ‘yacht’ in La Rochelle turned out to be not much more than a dinghy, but he hoisted his Sale Sharks flag up the mast and just got on with it; that was Roger, just get on with it. He was easily spotted walking about any town; usually donning his favourite hi-vis Sale Sharks away shirt.

Prior to the installation of a scoreboard in the West Stand at the AJ Bell, Roger would have a small manual one that he would update as the game went along so those in the East Stand could see the score. At supporter meals he would share stories of his ‘past life’ and would leave us in stitches as he told them in such a matter of fact way.

In summer, Roger would skipper or be part of the crew that would take boats from one part of the Med to another and his favourite photo was him doing this in a Sale Sharks polo shirt. Prior to 2020 he enjoyed many holidays especially to the Greek island of Simi where he loved the warm weather. He would keep facebook updated with photos of his favourite meals, including many an omelette!

Needless to say, Roger will be sorely missed by all of his family and friends, and also by his friends and fellow supporters within the Sharks Family.
