Ewan Ashman joins Edinburgh Rugby on short-term loan

Sale Sharks can today confirm that Ewan Ashman will leave the club to join Edinburgh Rugby on a short-term loan.

Scotland U20 hooker Ashman joined the Sale Sharks Academy in 2017 having come through the ranks at Sandbach Rugby Club, originally playing both centre and back-row at the Cheshire based club prior to switching to the front row.  The 19- year-old was born in Canada but qualifies for Scotland through his father, who was born in Edinburgh.

Ewan has represented Scotland at U16, U17 and most recently U20, where he played a vital role in their 2019 Junior World Cup, scoring seven tries to finish as the competitions top try scorer.

Ewan will join up with Edinburgh immediately and has the full blessing of  Steve Diamond, the Sale Director of Rugby commented:

“Ewan is a local lad, and a great prospect who has been in the Academy for a couple of years now. Edinburgh were looking for some cover during the World Cup and had seen Ewan play at the Junior World Cup, I got a call from Richard Cockerill and thought it would a great opportunity for Ewan to gain some experience and play some high level rugby in the Pro 14. We look forward to welcoming him back after his short spell in Scotland.”

Edinburgh Head Coach Richard Cockerill, added: “We’re really happy to have brought Ewan in on a short-term loan. He offers great cover at a key position and his skillset brings a different dynamic to our front-row.

“Having watched Ewan perform at the Junior World Cup, it’s clear that he’s a talented player with a real ability in and around the try-line. We hope that he can contribute from the get-go.”
